


Every school that has taken sustainability education seriously has hit the same obstacle: there are no hours. Adding a subject means removing another, and no teaching staff approves that subtraction gladly.
GreenComp offers a way out, but only if you accept using it for what it is: not a syllabus to deliver, but a grid for rereading what is already taught.
The 12 GreenComp competences do not belong to one subject. They distribute, and the distribution is more natural than it looks.

The operation is not inventing new content: it is recognising that systems thinking is already taught in science, that futures literacy is already exercised in reading a novel, and naming it.
1. Map what exists before designing anything. Ask each department which GreenComp competences are already touched, even implicitly. The result is almost always more coverage than expected on the complexity area, and almost none on values and action.
2. Name the competences in course plans. A competence that does not appear in the plan is not assessed, and a competence that is not assessed is not developed. The cheapest step is also the most effective.
3. Fill the gaps in the right order. GreenComp is built as a chain: values, complexity, imagination, action. Starting from action projects without having worked the three preceding areas produces pleasant activities with no effect on competence.
4. Assess with evidence, not satisfaction surveys. An authentic task -- analysing a local case, building a scenario, arguing a choice -- makes systems thinking and the ability to imagine visible. A questionnaire on environmental habits does not.
Confusing GreenComp with environmental education. A school can cover every environmental topic in the syllabus and develop none of the 12 competences, because content is the means and competence is the goal.
The check is simple: at the end of the pathway, do students know more things about the environment, or do they handle differently a complex problem whose answer they do not already know?
The collaboration, empathy and critical thinking competences that areas 3 and 4 require are described in detail by LifeComp. If the mapping shows gaps on the action area, very often the problem is not sustainability: it is that those transversal competences are not developed in any subject.
