GreenComp Explorer is live: explore the European sustainability competence framework
What is GreenComp
The European Sustainability Competence Framework (GreenComp) is the European Union framework defining the competences needed for the transition to sustainability. Published by the JRC in 2022, GreenComp provides a common foundation for understanding and developing the green competences of all European citizens.
The framework organises competences into 4 areas and 12 competences, providing a shared language for sustainability education.
The 4 competence areas
- Embodying sustainability values - Reflecting on personal and collective sustainability values
- Valuing sustainability: reflecting on personal values and how they relate to sustainability
- Supporting fairness: committing to justice and intergenerational equity
- Promoting nature: recognising that humans are part of nature
- Embracing complexity in sustainability - Understanding complex systems
- Systems thinking: analysing complex systems considering links between elements
- Critical thinking: evaluating information and claims about sustainability
- Problem framing: formulating sustainability challenges constructively
- Envisioning sustainable futures - Visualising alternative future scenarios
- Futures literacy: imagining alternative sustainable futures
- Adaptability: managing transitions and challenges in sustainability contexts
- Exploratory thinking: adopting innovative and creative approaches
- Acting for sustainability - Moving from reflection to action
- Political agency: navigating political processes and identifying responsibilities
- Collective action: acting together with others for change
